Submission No. 49

Tom! I can’t remember the name of this artist. I saw this sculpture — its bottom edge is perhaps 6 feet off the ground — at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena. The Museum’s website does not share the full roster of artists in the show “Beyond Brancusi,” only the hot shots. — Miriam

You stack of 2 X 4s (which are no longer 2 X 4s: lumberyards now sell boards called “2 X 4s” that are actually 1 1/2″ x 3 1/2″). You stack of 2 X 4s! You will not fall! You are suspended! Gravity pulls and pulls you towards the greater mass of the Earth and the ropes hold you in place. Fall! Tumble! Defy your ropes! You cannot. You never will, until you are disassembled. Which will not be your own doing, but some gallery staff or even hired movers. You will not fall, you stack of wood. We know that.

Will you?

About Tom Clyde

The best place to learn about me is to read my riffs. What could be more revealing? Cheeky, maybe, but true enough.
